I was in KL last week to attend the Women Netpreneur 2010 Conference organized by Gorgeous Geeks, a special interest group under IASA (International Alliance of Software Architects).
Alecia, the president of Gorgeous Geeks, had invited us from WomenBizSENSE (WBS) to attend. It so happened that we had a WBS Meeting around that time. The WBS Committee held the forte so to speak while I went off to KL.
I had met Alecia some 2 years ago when we were both among the 18 nominees of the Great Women of Our Time Award. I found her totally refreshing and honest and we had kept in touch. It helped that she was in the IT industry and we shared many similar perceptions about how women should always make full use of IT to run their businesses!
It was also Alecia who suggested that our WomenBizSENSE join the Women Community Network – an alliance of women’s groups spearheaded by Alecia and her team.
I find it quite funny that I keep getting involved in women’s organizations all the time. When I was on campus, I worked on women’s issues with a professor, helping with writing about NGO and women work. When I got out of university, I worked for a few years in advertising before I got roped back into handling a women’s fashion and beauty portal for another few years.
And then back in 2006, when my friend and I couldn’t find a women entrepreneur’s group in Penang, we decided to hell with it and start our own! (That was the not-so-humble beginning for WomenBizSENSE!)
And of course, I got involved again with another worthwhile endeavour in 2009 by donating our web design services to building and designing the website for The Pixel Project. (That’s another story of how I met Regina at the very same Great Women of Our Time Award and how we became friends and decided to do something to help the violence against women cause.)
