This Is How Good Persuasion Gets You Hyperventilating

Have been totally zonked working on our own website.

Yes.

We do a lot of that because it’s ridiculous to focus on others when one’s own “home” is unkempt.

And have we been going through lots of ‘evolution’ in our business website. Each change we evolve, we become better and better.

I don’t get it when designers say their websites are STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION all the time. Bah. They’re just too damn lazy to concentrate on their biggest asset – themselves!

Anyway, enough of ranting. I did a bit of that early this week and it feels good that a lot of people share my grief.

Learning From Spam…Yes, You Can!

Today’s post is about those spammy emails you get. I know, there’s a chunk of spammy emails out there. They crowd up our email inboxes and deleting them takes time.

Here’s one classic one especially if you have a website. (Name and URL have been removed and replaced with XXX because I want to give you an example…not give the perp a chance at free advertising.) But it’s a good, persuasive email though! And I can tell you, you can learn from mistakes and successes, yourself and others, if you want to.

Hello, my name is XXXXX and I am an internet marketing specialist. I was looking at websites under the keyword (your website URL) and came across your website. I see that you’re not ranked on the first page of Google for (fill your favourite keyword here).

I’m not sure if you’re aware of why you’re ranked this low but more importantly how easily correctable this is. (My comment: You get a heart attack here if you’re easily ruffled. Stop. Breathe. This guy is messing with your brain.)

There’s no reason you can’t have a top three ranking for the keyword XXXXX based on your site structure and content. You have a very nice site. (My comment: Very nice touch here – always complement first!)

You need significantly more one way anchor text backlinks. If you’re interested I can help you with this…

I’m talking about getting you ranked for ALL your keywords. Adding new backlinks on a steady and consistent basis from high PR quality websites is what produces the rankings you are looking for http://XXXXXX

The right kind of links are very critical in getting top ranking….and I can hand deliver these quality links to you.

My partners and I own 1000’s websites and offer private linking to hundreds of website owners just like yourself.

I didn’t send this email out to very many people but I am currently reaching out to a list of your ‘keyword competitors’ as well. (My comment: Always good to tease a bit. You don’t want to have your competitors getting this do you? The thing is, how does he know who your competition is?)

But I do favor your website because I can see your website monetizing the targeted website traffic the keyword XXXXX can deliver.

I have your contact information and phone number. Is it ok if I give you a call?

I have a very simple way to prove that what I do works and it’s risk free for you to try. Nothing beats seeing the results with your own eyes

Is it ok if I give you a call? I would love to pursue this further over the phone with you or should I go somewhere else?

Sincerely,
XXXXXX

Stop Hyperventilating – Take Five

Now if you were the easily disturbed sort, this email would have done its job. Scared you like hell. Got you running about and worrying, “Oh dear, he’s right. Maybe I am not ranking for this keyword. Maybe I do need his help!”

That could be true if your website was designed poorly, without useful content, without page titles or keywords.

If your website is developed by people who know what they’re doing, you’re in good hands. I always say that if you have a good design team, check with them.

Talking About SEO…It’s Not About SEO People

That’s why we’ve written lots of articles on this. About SEO. About rankings. About why SEO is supposed to be built into your website. It’s not an add-on. It should be inside your website from Day One.

And SEO is not the be-all and end-all.

A good website needs constant marketing. You can’t just build it and leave it there, hoping Google favours you and puts you number one for all your keywords.

The easiest way to check if this spammy email is playing with you is to check the keywords yourself.

Are you ranking well? If you’re not ranking well, ask why.

Is it because you don’t have much fresh content? Is it because your website’s hard to navigate? Is it because (gasp) it’s built wrongly by people who don’t know any better?

Also, what you think are keywords may not be keywords for your target audience/customers. Have you asked your customers what they type into search engines to find you? Don’t assume your keywords are THEIR keywords.
