Here’s a quick heads-up if you want to know more about women entrepreneurship and the art and power of marketing oneself.
I’ll be speaking at 2 events and I hope you will join me.
This Friday, 22 May, I will be a panellist at the Penang Institute forum at the Royale Bintang Hotel, Weld Quay. Our discussion will be about “Retaining Women in the Workforce: Closing Gaps and Breaking Barriers”.
The event is in the evening, from 8pm to 10pm and while admission is FREE, the hall can only take in 100 guests so sign up quick HERE if you don’t want to be turned away!
I’m excited to be speaking with some experts at this event and they include:
- Dr. Wong Chin-Huat, Penang Institute Fellow and Lead Researcher of the 2014 study ‘Explaining Women’s Labour Force Participation: A Case Study of Penang’;
- Datin Rohana Weiler, former VP, HR for Asia-Pacific Agilent Technologies;
- Janarthani Arumugam, community activist and President of NGO EMPOWER; and
- YB Steven Sim Chee Keong, Member of Parliament for Bukit Mertajam.
My insights will be on women in small business (based on my work as the co-founder of a women entrepreneur association) and I know that starting a business can be an alternative for many women who don’t want to go back to work after they have kids.
I’ll be speaking at another event the following Friday, 29 May but this time, it’s going to be at the artsy Hin Bus Depot on Jalan Gurdwara (behind GAMA).
This event is named Incitement and I am supposed to incite people to do positive things. So I decided I’ll talk about the power of marketing oneself, something which I fell into accidentally and learnt up quickly.
If you know my story, I was never the most outgoing girl in school. In fact I was shy and hated getting attention. But I quickly learnt I had a special skill in connecting people as a result of my shyness and that opened up a whole new world to me.
Until today, I am still shocked when people come up to me and say, “Oh I met so-and-so and she knows you!” Or “Oh my, you know so many interesting people! How do you do it?”
I always believed that you can market yourself honestly without sounding boastful or egoistic (I hate people who talk about themselves all the time!).
I’ve used this over and over and have made lots of friends.
And marketing oneself is magical – suddenly you are privy to ideas, people, knowledge and incredible resources that you never thought you had! You get opportunities to inspire even more people around you.

In the meantime, have a great week ahead!
